Swiss delegation heads for Chiapas
A Swiss delegation is travelling to Mexico to observe the peace process in the state of Chiapas. The team will meet government representatives and Zapatista rebels to try to broaden the dialogue between the two sides and create an atmosphere of trust.
A Swiss delegation is travelling to Mexico to observe the peace process in the southern state of Chiapas. The team will meet government representatives and Zapatista rebels to try to broaden the dialogue between the two sides and create an atmosphere of trust.
They will also meet civilians to try to get a picture of the human rights situation in Chiapas. The team consists of Ruedi Baumann of the Green party and Rosmarie Zapfl of the Christian Democrats, as well as the Roman Catholic representative, Roland-Bernhard Trauffer, and the Protestant delegate, Elizabeth Bäumlin.
It is the third visit of its kind and is due to last ten days. On Wednesday, the former negotiator in the conflict, the Mexican bishop, Samuel Ruiz, held talks in Berne with the foreign minister, Joseph Deiss, and aid organisations active in the area.
