Lugano crash out of Swiss Cup

Grasshoppers players celebrate a 1-0 victory over Yverdon on Sunday Keystone

Swiss top division football club, FC Lugano, crashed out of the Swiss Cup this weekend when the team suffered a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Wil.

Lugano’s departure from the annual competition was the only real upset of the weekend, which saw rivals Young Boys, Basel, FC Zurich, Lausanne and Grasshoppers all sail through to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Lausanne, who will be fighting to avoid relegation from the top division in the springtime, made easy work of their opponents, Thun, stealing a 4-2 victory to ease their way comfortably into the last eight.

Elsewhere, Bellinzona went down 1-2 to the Young Boys, Basel tripped up Colombier to notch up a 1-0 away victory and FC Zurich strode confidently towards the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Schaffhausen.

On Saturday, Wangen bei Olten booked a place in the quarters after a narrow 3-2 win over Délémont.

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Cup competition is as follows:

FC Zurich – Basel
Lucerne – Grasshoppers
Wangen bei Olten – Young Boys
Wil – Lausanne

The quarter-finals of the Swiss Cup are due to be played on March 21, with the semi-finals set for April 11. The final is scheduled for May 12 in Basel.
