Mikaelian knocked out of Austrian tennis tournament
The Swiss tennis player, Marie-Gaïane Mikaelian (WTA 176) has been knocked out of the $170,000 Uniqa Grand Prix tournament in Vienna, Austria.
Mikaelian, who was born in Armenia but now lives in canton Vaud, lost her first-round match in straight sets to the Argentinian Paola Suarez, 3:6, 1:6.
The 17-year-old, participating in only the third WTA tournament of her career, never seemed like she was in contention for victory in Vienna.
Last November, Mikaelian also lost her first-round match at the tournament in Philadelphia against Canadian Renata Kolbovic.
The Swiss teenager improved on that performance less than a month ago in Tashkent, when she reached the tournament’s last four, before being stopped by Germany’s Bianka Lamade.
Elsewhere in Europe, Emmanuelle Gagliardi has crashed out of the first round of another international tournament, losing to her Russian opponent, Evgenia Koulikovskaya, in Palermo.
The Geneva-based player lost to the Russian in three sets, 1:6, 6:1, 0:6.
On Monday, compatriot Patty Schnyder fared better in the Vienna tournament, comfortably winning her own first-round tie against Romanian player Ruxandra Dragomir in straight sets, 7:6 (7:2), 6:4.
Schnyder now goes on to meet the Czech Republic’s Denise Chladkova in the second round on Wednesday.
