Police quell night of demonstrations in Zurich

Police in Zurich used water cannon and rubber bullets to break up an unauthorised demonstration on Friday night by left-wing activists.
More than 300 people descended upon the Bellevue area on Friday night, protesting under the banner, “Against reactionary propaganda and fat profits – Fight Capitalism.”
Police arrested 58 people, many of whom were between 15 and 17 years-old. They were charged with taking part in an unauthorised demonstration and with disturbing the peace.
By Saturday morning many of the teenagers had been collected by their parents.
Seven foreigners were also arrested and are still in police custody. They will now be referred on to the authorities and could face deportation.
Right-wing extremists also joined the leftist group during their march.
No one was severely hurt during the police operation. The extent of property damage is not yet known but police say their intervention prevented any widespread damage.
