Mortality rate continues to fall
There were just over 61,000 deaths among Switzerland's resident population in 2007, with cardiovascular diseases, cancer and dementia the three most frequent causes.
There has been little fluctuation in the number of deaths in recent years despite a rise in population, according to the Federal Statistics Office.
Last year, the Swiss population increased by 1.4 per cent to 7.7 million.
Even though they account for more than one in every three deaths, cardiovascular diseases are on the decline with 22,613 cases in 2007, the Statistics Office said in a report published on Monday.
More than 16,000 people died of cancer, while dementia – a degenerative disease of old age – is on the rise accounting for seven per cent of all deaths.
