A colourful journey through Switzerland
If you close your eyes and think of Switzerland, what colours do you see? Maybe the white of snow, the yellow of the Post buses, or the red of geraniums? A new book created by Karen Ichters and Hadi Barkat offers a range of shades and hues.
Simultaneously a work of art and a unique portrait of a genre, Between Red and White is an invitation to discover the colours of Switzerland.
"I hope that the attention given our project will go beyond clichés," Hadi Barkhat tells swissinfo.ch.
"I've spent the past five years traveling back and forth between the United States and Switzerland, then between Denmark and Switzerland," she says.
"This experience allowed me to look at the familiar with new eyes and to note the small things that are of interest to me."
As for Karen Ichters, she says she is proud of the influence that the Swiss graphics tradition has had on her.
"The influence on my work and on that of generations of graphic artists is undeniable," she says. "The formal simplicity of my drawings is above all a result of the practice of linoleum engraving and the influence of such things as native art, Japanese art, and popular art."
