Geneva researchers make breakthrough in treatment of diabetes

Researchers at the University of Geneva have made a breakthrough which could have a big impact on the treatment of diabetes.

An international research team, which includes Professor Lelio Orci (pictured) and other members of the university’s Morphology Department, has developed a way of regulating the release of hormones into the bloodstream. Their findings have been published in the latest edition of the magazine, Science.

Using genetic engineering, the scientists developed cells programmed to produce the desired hormone, for example insulin. This is joined to a protein which allows the hormone to be stored inside the cell.

To allow the hormone to be released in a controlled manner, the patient takes a soluble molecule called a ligand.

In a press release, the University of Geneva said this method was very promising for diabetics who suffer from a lack of insulin. By implanting them with modified cells, they could benefit from new reserves of the hormone, held within their own bodies.

If the level of glucose builds up in the blood, they can simply take ligand-based medicines, which will quickly free the right amount of insulin.

Although the treatment is still in an experimental stage, the scientists believe this controlled release of hormones could be used in pain relief and to treat obesity and angina.
