Out & about in Switzerland: Chateau d’Oex hosts a bevy of beetles

The VW Beetle struts its stuff every year in Chateau d'Oex. Lémania Coccinelle Club

The 10th international meeting of Volkswagen Beetles takes place from August 25 to 27 in the resort of Chateau d’Oex. The organisers claim it’s one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

The Lémania Coccinelle Club, which organises the event, calls it an exclusive meeting “reserved for VWs and derivatives with air-cooled engines”.

About 450 cars motored to the first event in 1991, and the club expects to attract about three times as many this year. A Ferris wheel is being set up in the middle of the huge VW parking lot to give Beetle fans an aerial view.

The highlight of the event will be a car rally on Sunday morning. The bugs will parade through the scenic countryside surrounding Chateau d’Oex (canton Vaud) and past the idyllic villages of Saanen, Gstaad and Les Diablerets.

For the first time, there’ll be a departure point at each end of the route, allowing the Beetles to proceed in both directions.

The organisers say the “Chateau d’Oex 2000” event is not to be missed since they’re planning on taking a break next year to recharge their batteries.
