Unemployment holding steady at nine-year low

Unemployment in Switzerland remained unchanged in October at 1.7 per cent of the working population, its lowest level for nearly nine years.

Figures from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs in Bern show that 62,953 people are jobless, 624 more than at the end of September.

Worst affected is canton Geneva where unemployment is 4.1 per cent. Joblessness is also above the national average in the other French-speaking cantons (except Fribourg and Jura), and in Italian-speaking Ticino.

The Secretariat says unemployment is at its lowest in canton Appenzell Innerrhoden, which registered a rate of 0.2 per cent.

The number of people looking for a job has decreased slightly to 109,806 or 283 fewer than in September. The number of jobs available has gone down by 763 to 12,296.
