Swiss junior celebrates Wimbledon win

Valent is only the third Swiss to win the Wimbledon boy's title Keystone Archive

Zurich's Roman Valent has completed a memorable week for the Swiss at Wimbledon, winning the junior title one day after celebrating his 18th birthday.

Valent beat Luxembourg’s junior world number two, Gilles Muller, in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) on Sunday to become only the third Swiss winner of the boy’s tournament.

With the two previous Swiss winners, Roger Federer and Heinz Günthardt, having gone on to enjoy even greater successes on the senior circuit, Valent is certainly in prestigious company.

Immediately after Sunday’s final, Valent admitted that he had not yet taken in the significance of his victory. He added that the lack of expectation surrounding him had helped him “to play without pressure.”

The young player said he was now looking forward to competing at the under-18 European Championships in Klosters before returning to action with Grasshoppers in the Swiss Interclub championship.
