Cabinet agrees on need for new remit
The Swiss cabinet has decided to pursue reforms to its portfolio and functions.
The justice ministry and Federal Chancellery were asked on Wednesday to develop proposals by next spring to update and expand on the cabinet’s current remit.
The cabinet is the only government body to have remained essentially unchanged since the creation of the Swiss federalist state in 1848.
Possible changes include extending the length of the presidency beyond a year, accelerating the decision-making process and expanding the range of political parties represented in the cabinet.
It is not intended to include proposals that will require fundamental changes, so that any adjustments can be enforced quickly.
