Cabinet delays aid commitment, blames economy

Switzerland's commitment to increase development aid to 0.5 per cent of gross national income (GNI) is on hold in "the face of uncertain economic forecasts".

Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey confirmed the decision on Tuesday during parliament’s question time.

Alliance Sud, an umbrella organisation of charities, said the government was “torpedoing” development aid. Calmy-Rey said there would be “active communication” but no immediate decision.

Last year both chambers of parliament agreed in principle to increase the percentage of GNI going to development aid to 0.5 per cent from 0.4 per cent of GNI by 2015.

Politicians have called for additional funds for the remainder of 2009.
