Foreign Minister Joseph Deiss was re-elected to the cabinet by a joint session of parliament on Wednesday.

He was confirmed with 173 votes in the 245-seat parliament.

The vote is part of a traditional re-election procedure, which follows parliamentary elections. Those were held in October and showed the right-wing Swiss People’s Party gaining the most seats in the House of Representatives.

Brief profile:

Joseph Deiss: Elected to cabinet in March 1999. He is a Christian Democrat and the current Foreign Minister. Has faced no major political challenges yet and has impressed the public and the media with his professional representation of Swiss interests abroad. He has travelled widely in his first few months on the job. He would like to see Switzerland become a member of the European Union and United Nations.
