Government expresses concern over Honduras
The Swiss foreign ministry has issued a statement expressing concern over the latest events in Honduras, where the president has been ousted in a military coup.
It called on those responsible “to re-establish constitutional order and the rule of law”. It also called for a democratic and peaceful resolution of the crisis.
World leaders including United States President Barack Obama have condemned the coup and demanded that President Manuel Zelaya be reinstated. Zelaya himself, who was abroad when the coup was staged, has vowed to return home.
Reports said police and soldiers clashed with thousands of protesters outside Honduras’s national palace on Monday, leaving at least 15 people injured.
As part of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) regional programme for Central America, Switzerland invests SFr5-7 million ($4.6-6.4 million) per year in Honduras, in particular in agriculture, environmental protection and providing drinking water.
The SDC runs a Coordination Office in the capital Tegucigalpa for carrying out its projects. Some 270 Swiss citizens are resident in the central American country.
