Helmut Kohl suspends membership of Credit Suisse board
The former German chancellor, Helmut Kohl, has temporarily stepped down from his post on the international advisory board of the Swiss Credit Suisse group. The move follows investigations into his role in the illegal funding of his CDU party.
The former German chancellor, Helmut Kohl, has temporarily stepped down from his post on the international advisory board of the Swiss Credit Suisse group. The move follows investigations into his role in illegal funding practices by his Christian Democratic Union in Germany.
A spokeswoman for the Credit Suisse group said the indefinite suspension was at Kohl’s request. She stressed that he was not resigning from the body.
She said he would remain suspended at least until a preliminary investigation by the public prosecutor and other investigations had been completed. Kohl has admitted to accepting DM2 million in illegal donations for his CDU party during his 16 years as chancellor.
Credit Suisse created an international and a national advisory board last year, bringing together leading politicians and business people. The teams meet twice a year to discuss issues which affect the group’s business, and to advise the management on strategic decisions.
