House speaker lauds Swiss multi-party system
Parliament has ended its three-week winter session in Bern, with the speaker of the House of Representatives, André Bugnon, praising Switzerland's multi-party system.
The first session of parliament since October’s national elections was dominated by the vote against re-electing controversial Justice Minister Christoph Blocher and the election to the cabinet of Swiss People’s Party colleague Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf instead.
Bugnon said on Friday that every political party in Switzerland had its own manifesto and behind every grouping were thousands of Swiss who had given them their confidence.
He noted that Switzerland’s 7.5 million inhabitants did not always want to wear “one particular political colour”.
What they wanted was for the authorities to do everything possible so that they could continue to live in mutual understanding, security and peace.
