— 562,813 Swiss citizens were registered at Swiss diplomatic missions abroad in 1998. This marked an increase of 10,500 compared to the previous year.
— 62 percent of Swiss abroad live in Europe — 95 percent of them within European Union member states.
— The vast majority of Swiss abroad live in France (146,000), followed by Germany (66,500), the United States (66,000), Italy (39,500), Canada (34,000) and Britain (24,000).
— About 70 percent have dual citizenship.
