Leuthard discusses financial crisis with EBRD

Economics Minister Doris Leuthard is to attend a meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development which is discussing the current financial crisis.

Leuthard is participating at the talks in London on Friday and Saturday in her capacity as a governor of the EBRD, which aims to help build market economies and democracies in countries from central Europe to central Asia.

A Swiss statement said that the 63 governors of the Bank would provide guidance in coming up with a medium term plan (2010/2011 – 2015) to overcome the financial crisis and deal with its aftermath.

It added that the EBRD was facing increased demand for its financing as other sources had “largely dried up”.

Leuthard is said to be “generally supportive” of a proposed EBRD action plan but will call for caution regarding quality standards, governance and priority setting, as well as risk management and a “prudent” use of existing resources.

Switzerland considers the EBRD an important partner in implementing its policy in favour of eastern Europe and central Asia.
