Poll pits Swiss against killing predators
An opinion poll has found that 72 per cent of Swiss are against killing predatory animals such as the lynx and wolf to protect goat and sheep populations.
Ninety per cent of respondents backed either keeping or increasing the number of protected areas where hunting is banned, according to results of the survey commissioned by nature organisation Pro Natura.
More than two-thirds – 69 per cent – were against culling of fish-eating birds such as the cormorant in protected areas, as called for by fishermen.
Pro Natura notes that the findings contrast to the planned easing of restrictions under revisions being put forward to the law on hunting, including the killing of protected species under specific conditions outside nature reserves.
A total of 1,030 people living in the French- and German-speaking parts of Switzerland were interviewed for the survey in March and April by pollsters gfs-zurich.
