Poll: Swiss are pessimistic about old age pension plan

A majority of Swiss take a pessimistic view of the federal old age pension plan and believe that they will not get enough money to make ends meet when they retire, says a government-commissioned poll.

A majority of Swiss take a pessimistic view of the federal old age pension plan and believe that they will not get enough money to make ends meet when they retire, says a government-commissioned poll.

The finance ministry’s newly-released representative poll of 1,000 people finds that a mere 35 percent of those questioned believe the pension plan will be an effective financial backup when they retire.

Most of the negative opinions about the social programme comes from those under the age of 45.

A much more optimistic assessment comes from those already retired: very few people doubt that the next generation will get their due federal pension.

The finance ministry also questioned people about taxes.

A majority of those polled believe that the overall tax burden in Switzerland is higher than the average in European Union member states – an assessment which is wrong, the polls says.

At the same time, those polled also believe that taxes will increase should Switzerland decide to join the EU.
