Storm claims one life, injures several
A storm that hit Switzerland on Tuesday night and continued to wreak havoc on Wednesday has killed one person and injured several others.
Storm “Quinten” produced the strongest winds in the Bernese Oberland, where gusts of 174km/h raked the Kleine Scheidegg on the Jungfrau mountain.
In Zug, in central Switzerland, a forestry worker was killed by a falling tree. Several others were injured.
Elsewhere in central Switzerland, two six-year-old girls were injured by a falling tree. One suffered leg fractures and had to be taken to hospital. The other suffered a concussion.
Planes travelling into Zurich airport also had trouble landing in the storm. An airport spokesman said 27 planes trying to land between 6am and 3pm either had to make another pass or flew on to another airport.
A new cold front has now arrived bringing cooler temperatures and snow at lower altitudes.
