Swiss condemn Jakarta suicide bombings

Switzerland has joined international condemnation of Friday's bomb attacks on two luxury hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta which killed at least eight people.

“The foreign ministry is deeply shocked about the attacks, which claimed the death of many innocent victims,” a statement said.

The casualties include citizens of Indonesia, Japan, India and South Korea as well as the United States, Canada, Australia and several European countries, according to local police.

No Swiss nationals are among the victims, according to a foreign ministry statement. However, a chief executive of a Swiss company in Indonesia was killed in the blast against the hotels in the business district of Jakarta.

Observers say suspicion is likely to fall on the Jemaah Islamiah militant group, blamed for previous attacks on the island of Bali seven years ago.

The apparently coordinated bombings follow a period in which the government had made progress in tackling security threats from militant Islamic groups.
