Swiss envoy gets earful from Tehran

Iran on Wednesday summoned the Swiss ambassador to protest what it called "interventionist" statements made by the United States on the country's June 12 election.

The Iranian foreign ministry communicated its “protest and displeasure” to Livia Leu Agosti, according to the Fars News Agency. Switzerland represents the interests of the US in the Islamic Republic.

Late on Wednesday, the Swiss foreign ministry confirmed the meeting had taken place, but refused to comment on the contents of the letter intended for the US government.

A senior Canadian diplomat in Tehran had also been summoned to the ministry, as well as several European ambassadors, the semi-official news agency said.

Major western nations have questioned the fairness of the official vote results, which showed that hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won a landslide against moderate Mir Hossein Mousavi. The result sparked days of protests in Tehran and elsewhere.

US President Barack Obama said the upheaval showed that “Iranian people are not convinced with the legitimacy of the election”.
