Swiss proposal rejected at Bali conference
An international conference to fight corruption has failed to approve a Swiss proposal to take into account the opinion of civil society and the media.
The foreign ministry said it regretted that the meeting could not agree on a mechanism for reviewing the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
The conference on the Indonesian island of Bali was also presented a plan by Switzerland to tackle the controversial issue of asset recovery.
Switzerland has played a pioneering role in recovering assets of politically exposed persons and returning these to the countries of origin, according to a senior foreign ministry official.
The UN convention, which came into force three years ago, has been ratified by more than 100 countries. The Swiss parliament is still to discuss the treaty.
