Swiss propose alternative group to G20
Switzerland's deputy ambassador to the United Nations in New York has proposed a UN-backed forum open to all members as an alternative to the exclusive G20.
Heidi Grau told a UN General Assembly conference late on Thursday that such a group would allow for all member states to express their positions.
The G20, a group of nations with the world’s strongest economies, will gather in London next month. That group does not include Switzerland and many other small nations.
But Grau cautioned against the hasty creation of any new UN body without first studying how the current system could be improved.
Without doing that, any new institution could fall prey to the same problems and political power struggles as organisations already in place, she said.
