The Brissago Islands on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore are home to subtropical botanical gardens, which benefit from the microclimate created by the lake. The waters draw the summer heat, and release it again in winter. The gardens were started by Baroness Antoinette Fleming St. Leger in the nineteenth century. (Raffaella Rossello, swissinfo.ch)
