The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) has been named animal of the year 2026 by Pro Natura. On its website the Swiss environmental protection organisation says the decision is “an appeal in favour of gardens, green areas, cemeteries and parks that are laid out and cared for in such a way that they also provide welcoming environments for the hedgehog”.
