Lausanne punish Torpedo Moscow in UEFA Cup first round
For the first time since 1982, Lausanne have qualified for the second round of the UEFA Cup. The team from canton Vaud beat Torpedo Moscow 2-0 on Thursday in the Russian capital.
Lausanne were clearly the superior team. They had several chances in the first half, with particularly impressive play by strikers Javier Mazzoni of Argentina and Polish forward Marcin Kuzba.
Moscow’s feeble attempts at offensive action failed to find gaps in Lauanne’s defence. Kuzba scored the first goal for Lausanne in the 29th minute. Thirty three minutes later, Daniel Puce transformed a corner kick into a goal, bringing the score to 2-0.
In the first leg the Swiss team had beaten the Russians 3-2.
Other Swiss teams involved in UEFA Cup action included FC Basel, Zürich and St Gallen. There were mixed fortunes in those matches.
FC Basel are also through to the second round. Having won their first leg against Brann Bergen 3-2, Basel were initally trailing 1-4 at the hands of the Norwegians on Thursday.
Tchouga scored their only goal in the first 45 minutes, 20 minutes into the game.
Basel then caught up in the second half, thanks to an own goal by Roy Wassenberg, a penalty by Oliver Kreuzer and a last minute goal in the 90th minute by André Muff. The final score: 4-4.
FC Zürich were less fortunate. They lost 2-0 away to Genk of Belgium, thereby crashing out in the UEFA Cup first round. The scorers for the Belgian side were Koen Daerden in the 30th minute and Marc Hendrickx, three minutes into overtime.
