Swiss resorts trail Austrian competitors
Austria's tourist destinations in the Alps outrank Swiss resorts according to an international survey.
Zermatt, Engelberg, Lucerne and St Moritz are listed in the overall top 15 list which is led by the Austrian resort of Kleinwalsertal.
Experts studied nearly 80 destinations in Europe’s alpine region, considering overnight stays, prices and consumer demand, according to BAK Basel Economics institute.
Top class hotels are key for a resort in general, while attractive ski slopes and a wide range of offers make the difference for the winter and summer seasons respectively.
Lucerne and Interlaken lead the table of summer resorts, but Zermatt, Samnaun and Arosa feature well behind three Austrian winter destinations.
The study, published on Monday, is the fourth since 2005. It was commissioned by the Swiss economics ministry.
