Avalanche in Valais raises weekend alarm

Eleven skiers, presumed to be French, went missing shortly after an avalanche swept them away near Switzerland's southern border with Italy, police reported on Saturday.

One person was able to free himself and raise the alarm, and rescuers eventually managed to recover all but one, the Swiss News Agency , said on Saturday.

The incident happened on Mont Velan, a towering 3,730-metre peak that straddles the Swiss-Italian border.

Switzerland's National Avalanche Centre had warned of a “considerable” risk of snowslides in the region on Saturday.
