Schindler confirmed on Thursday that it has won an exclusive contract to supply the escalators and moving walkways for Hong Kong's new railways development.

The contract will see Schindler provide 48 escalators for the Ma On Shan line with work due for completion by December 2004. In addition, the company will build another 20 escalators and six moving walkways for pedestrian links to the metro system.

The contract has an initial value of SFr18 million ($10.5 million), with options for additional equipment of SFr12 million.

All the escalators and moving walkways will be manufactured at Schindler Group’s worldwide escalator headquarters in Vienna.

With group sales of more than SFr8.7 billion and more than 43,000 employees, Schindler is the world’s largest producer of escalators and the second biggest manufacturer of elevators.
