Strong sales growth reported for Swisscom’s German subsidiary
Swisscom's German subsidiary, debitel, reported strong growth on Tuesday with sales up 26.3 per cent to SFr3.97 billion. The performance was due to growth of 86 per cent in its customer base to 8.6 million subscribers.
Its market share in Germany now stands at 14 per cent. But the company’s operating income fell seven per cent because of heavy investment.
Debitel also said on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with Vodafone to cooperate in offering the next generation of mobile phone services.
Swisscom’s subsidiary withdrew from last year’s auction of third generation licences in Germany and said it intended to offer Vodafone’s services through its network.
Swisscom acquired a majority stake in debitel in October 1999.
