swissinfo launches traffic information service

The new traffic information service is designed to help motorists stay on the open road swissinfo.ch

swissinfo has joined forces with Switzerland's leading telecommunications operator, Swisscom, to launch a new nationwide traffic information service.

The new 24-hour telephone service (0900 55 60 55), which comes into operation this summer, is part of swissinfo’s efforts to provide foreign visitors driving in and through Switzerland with instant access to the latest information about the nationwide state of traffic.

The traffic information line, to be made available at first only in German, is connected to a voice-activated computer system which responds to requests from the motorist for information on the traffic conditions in specific locations.

swissinfo’s site devoted to the flow of traffic around Switzerland, http://traffic.swissinfo.org, contains additional information such as a journey planner with up-to-date information designed to help motorists beat the traffic queues by plotting alternative routes away from major jams.

Other features of the website include an archive of traffic data to help users predict future traffic blackspots, interactive maps and a list of frequencies for picking up traffic information on the radio while on the open road.
