Switzerland finances radio production studio for Kosovo

Switzerland and the United Nations signed an agreement under which Switzerland will provide and finance a radio production studio in Kosovo’s capital Pristina, the authorities said Thursday.

The Swiss foreign ministry said Swiss and U.N. representatives signed the accord in New York this week, in line with an agreement reached in Kosovo in July between Swiss Foreign Minister Joseph Deiss and Bernard Kouchner, the head of the U.N. Interim Administration Mission in the Serb province.

The radio production unit will be set up in Pristina and is aimed at providing unbiased information for all ethnic communities about U.N. activities in the region.

Six international and 20 local journalists are to provide up to 24 hours of programming, which is to be broadcast on existing or new radio stations.

Most of the broadcasts will be in local languages but there will also be some in French and English.

Switzerland will cover the estimated costs of SFr2 million ($1.3 million) for the one-year project.

From staff and wire reports.
