The win leaves Basel with a strong chance of sweeping up the championship. Their fourth consecutive win nudged up their league points to 34, comfortably ahead of defending champions, Zurich Grasshoppers.

However, all is not lost for Grasshoppers, who creamed Servette 5-1 on Friday.

Meanwhile, St Gallen were beaten by FC Zurich 0-1 in a weak away game of missed opportunities. The defeat marked the team's first defeat under their new coach, Gérard Castella.

St Gallen, who were beaten 24 minutes into the game by a goal by Kawelaschwilis, retain their fourth place ranking but they are now without the chance of winning the title.
