Arts and Culture
The end of Soviet-era government control over the arts and culture has given new freedoms to artists in Central Asia.
But for the region’s cash-strapped governments funding the arts is not an option. As a consequence, many artists have either moved abroad or given up.
In Uzbekistan, for example, a film production agency which once employed 1,500 people now has 200.
Those that remain have rediscovered the stories of their ancestors as part of efforts to create a post-Soviet cultural identity in the face of western influence.
