Chala Cubana: Las Ponina
Latin / Cuban / Jazz. Chala Cubana is a half Swiss (from French-speaking Switzerland) half Cuban band project founded 10 years ago by prominent musicians from both scenes. Las Ponina is the their 3rd album to date and was recorded this spring in Havanna at the Buena Vista Social Club studios. The Cuban band pianist Alexis Bosch Mendez tranformed 11 pieces by Swiss composers into Latin versions. The resulting music is a crackling pairing of occidental lyricism with the island's furious rhythms. Listening to this hot band does really evoke past summertime feelings.
