Polanski to leave jail on Friday

Film director Roman Polanski will be placed under house arrest in his Swiss alpine chalet on Friday, authorities have said.

The 76-year-old must stay in the house and wear an electronic bracelet as officials decide whether to extradite him to the United States for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

“Polanski will be transferred on Friday to Gstaad,” said Folco Galli, a spokesman for the Federal Justice Office. He said the filmmaker could be in his home by early afternoon.

Galli said on Wednesday that he would not comment further until Polanski was delivered to the chalet. He was being held until he paid the full SFr4.5 million ($4.5 million) bail.

Polanski was picked up more than two months ago at Zurich airport after arriving for a film festival in the city.

The director has been held in a jail in Winterthur, near Zurich. It is unclear whether he will travel directly to his chalet or be transferred to another facility to be outfitted with the monitoring bracelet.
