Swiss documentary wins Venice festival award
Swiss filmmaker Stefano Knuchel has been awarded a Venice Film Festival critics' prize for his documentary Hugo en Afrique.
The Bisato d’Oro, or Golden Medal, was awarded by the Jury of Independent Film Critics for the documentary’s capacity to “tell a story of art and life”.
The film by the 43-year-old director from Lugano is dedicated to Hugo Pratt, the Italian comic book author who died in 1995. Little was known before this documentary about his close relationship with Africa.
In particular the jury praised the honesty with which film captured the “fantastical” world of the Pratt as he went in search of his roots, in a manner that was “free from any religion veils or ideology”.
