Swiss take share of limelight at Cannes
The film industry is turning its eyes to the French seaside resort of Cannes for its annual film festival. The event gets underway on Wednesday with a ceremony which includes the screening of a short film by the Franco-Swiss director, Jean-Luc Godard.
Godard’s work, “Origin of the 21st Century”, is described by festival organisers as “a kind of prophetic recapitulation synthesising the entire century in 15 minutes”.
Competing for the Golden Palm award this year are 23 feature films, ten of them from Europe, eight from Asia and the Middle East, four from the United States and one entry from Brazil.
Among them are James Ivory’s “The Golden Bowl”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou” by Joel Coen and “Bread and Roses” by Ken Loach.
Also competing for a prize at the festival is “Bread and Tulips”, a film about a housewife who leaves her family to lead a new life in Venice, which was directed by the Swiss-Italian Silvio Soldini.
But as usual they eyes of many people in Cannes for the festival will be on the many celebrities attending it, including the guests of honour, Gregory Peck, Sean Penn and Philippe Noiret.
