A new exhibition of photographs gives visitors a timely reminder that people in Vietnam are still suffering from the consequences of war.
The exhibition in Olten is entitled, “I was very sad as my child was born,” and features photographs by men and women dating from the Vietnam war, which ended 25 years ago.
Pictures taken by the Basler photographer, Roland Schmid, show the horrifying consequences of the chemicals napalm, and Agent Orange, used by the United States during the war, which led to the disfigurement of many Vietnamese who came into contact with them. The International Committee of the Red Cross estimates around a million people are still suffering today.
The Swiss photojournalist, René Burri, and France’s Marc Riboud, meanwhile, document the war itself, and pictures taken by Vietnamese photographers depict the difficulties of living with war.
The exhibition, which is supported by the Federal Office of Culture and various Swiss aid projects in Vietnam, runs from April 27 to May 28, at the Stadthaus Olten.
