The city of Winterthur is celebrating African culture with a one-week festival, which ends on Monday, June 4. The "Soul of Africa" festival features music, dance and films reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of African life.

The 12th annual event devoted to the culture of the African continent is sponsored by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SADC).

Some 20 bands are performing at the event, representing a cross-section of African music from Senegal to South Africa. In addition to the traditional sounds of Africa, visitors will be able to sample jazz, rumba, Latin and rock.

For the first time this year a Winterthur theatre group, “Theater am Stadtgarten”, is joining forces with a music and dance act “Yelemba d’Abidjan” from Ivory Coast in a co-production celebrating the musical heritage of west Africa.

Another new attraction for visitors is the African bazaar, which aims to bring the colours, scents and flavour of African market life to the heart of Winterthur.
