Around a million partygoers are expected to fill the streets of Zurich on August 10 for the city's annual street parade.

Now in its tenth year, the hugely popular festival of dance culture runs non-stop from Friday night until Monday morning, and peaks with a 2.2 kilometre parade through the city’s heart.

Considered one of Europe’s biggest street parties, the Zurich festival is this year poised to overtake the famous Berlin Love Parade in terms of participants.

The parade – which features some 30 brightly decorated floats – kicks off at 15:15 (Zurich time).

Those looking for a more sedate celebration should consider heading to the centennial party of Switzerland’s famous Villa Cassel – an historic hotel perched above the country’s biggest glacier at over 2,000 metres above sea level.

On August 11, the villa will put on special tours of the spectacular building, built above the Aletsch Glacier in 1902 by wealthy British banker Sir Ernest Cassel.

This year’s celebration echoes a tradition started by Sir Ernest himself, when every August locals were invited to the villa.
