Lara Gut just misses world cup medal

Sunday’s downhill race ended in disappointment for Swiss skier Lara Gut, who placed fourth at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The 19-year-old from canton Ticino missed the bronze medal by a just third of a second. Earlier in the week, she took fourth in the super-G event too.

First place went to Austria’s 29-year-old Elisabeth Görgl, who also captured gold in Tuesday’s super-G.

Right behind her on the Kandahar run were American Lindsey Vonn and German Maria Riesch.

Gut, who hurt her knee in a slalom crash on Friday, remained relatively upbeat about the results.

“It’s a bummer. But on Saturday, I was walking on crutches. I wasn’t top fit for sure but I will get another chance,” Gut told reporters after the race.

The other members of the Swiss women’s team placed within the top 15, with Dominique Gisin in eighth place, Fabienne Suter in 13th and Nadja Kamer in 14th.
