Long jumper breaks long-standing record
A 37 year old Swiss record fell to long-jumper Irene Pusterla at the European Athletics Indoor Championship in Paris on Saturday.
Pusterla’s jump of 6.71 meters was two centimetres better than the indoor long jump record held by Meta Antenen. It was also 14 centimetres further than her own previous best.
In 2010 Pusterla took Antenen’s outdoor record which had stood for 39 years.
Her jump secured her a place in Sunday’s finals.
A second Swiss record almost fell on Saturday morning, when sprinter Pascal Mancini ran a 60 metre heat in 6”61, only one hundredth of a second behind the time set by Cédric Grand in 1999.
But there was disappointment for Mancini in the afternoon when he managed only 6”67 and failed to qualify for the finals.
Switzerland will nevertheless be represented thanks to Cédric Nabe, who clocked 6”62 in the semi-finals.
