The year in sound: Schwingen to a different beat
All this week swissinfo is replaying highlights from this year's audio archive. Today we recall a highly traditional sporting event in an untraditional setting.
Sports don’t come much more traditional than ‘schwingen’, the wrestling discipline that began life in the medieval mountain farms of central and eastern Switzerland and has hardly changed in its progression through to the modern day.
In 2001, though, the sports organisers opted for a change of location, bringing the Federal Wrestling Festival to Nyon in the heart of the French-speaking lowlands.
The sport’s first major foray outside of German-speaking parts in some 15 years was intended not only as a celebration of schwingen, but also as a coming-together of diverse Swiss cultures.
