Federer said on his official website he was "really looking forward" to facing Portugal at home in a second-tier, second-round tie.

The encounter starts on July 8, five days after the Wimbledon men’s singles final. World number 14 Stanislas Wawrinka is also expected to play.

Federer last played in the Davis Cup – the top international team event in men's tennis – in September 2009, winning both of his singles as Switzerland beat Italy in a World Group playoff.

However, following a 5-0 thrashing by Kazakhstan in September 2010, Switzerland were relegated from the World Group – the 16 best teams in the world – to the zonal group Europe/Africa.

The Swiss tennis federation says it will choose a venue for the Portugal tie within days.
