Two second half goals by the Swiss international striker Stéphane Chapuisat sealed victory for Grasshoppers and left Xamax firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.

Third-placed Lausanne missed an opportunity to draw level with Lugano on points after being held 1-1 at home by Servette Geneva. Marcin Kuzba gave Lausanne the lead in the 17th minute but Servette earned a point with an equaliser by midfielder Johann Lonfat after 61 minutes.

The other match played on Saturday saw Basel win 2-0 away at Lucerne with both goals coming from South African striker George Koumantarakis in the first half.

Sunday's action will see leaders Lugano away at Zurich hoping once again to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

In the other games, strugglers Yverdon go to Sion, and Aarau are at home to last year's champions, St Gallen.
