Swiss Solidarity said people donated SFr20 million on January 21, which it billed as a national fundraising day.

Swiss donated SFr227 million in 2004 after the Asian tsunami and SFr74 million in 2000 to help victims of storms in Switzerland.

Project manager Alain Geiger said people in Haiti were concerned about the rainy season, which begins in April.

“There are still about one million people homeless or living in temporary shelters,” he said.

Swiss Solidarity works with 16 partner relief organisations on the ground in Haiti.

Donations can still be made online or at any post office in Switzerland.
