Hingis needed just 48 minutes to wrap up a straight sets win (6-1, 6-1) in her singles match against Nicole Pratt. Federer then squandered three match points in a row against Richard Fromberg before finally winning through 6-3, 6-2.

The Swiss pair then combined to beat Pratt and Fromberg 6-1, 6-3 in the mixed doubles rubber.

Following their opening 3-0 win over Thailand, Hingis and Federer are now strong favourites to contest the final, although South Africa could still take top spot in the qualifying group.

The defending champions, represented once again by Amanda Coetzer and Wayne Ferreira, are due to meet Thailand on Thursday before playing a possible decider against Hingis and Federer on Friday.
